The gathering

What to expect, hour by hour

Three days in Frankfurt. This is the shape of the weekend, so you can book leave from work around it. Items marked expected are still being confirmed by the host committee.

Saturday evening

Grand cultural display

The hall darkens, the drums start, and the clans come in one after the other — Wi-Ya, Wi-Warr, Wi-Tang — in full regalia, feathers and beads, the gongs answering each other across the floor. Elders lead, children follow at the back copying the steps. This is the hour everybody films.

Gala night

Tables cleared, band on stage, everyone in their best. Highlife, makossa and bottle dances, then the floor fills and does not empty until the small hours. Dress smart or dress in cloth — both are right.

The general assembly

This is where the decisions are actually taken: accounts read out, the executive elected, the next host country chosen. Registered members sit in the room with a vote, not in the gallery watching a meeting.

Saturday afternoon

Time with the elders

A quieter room, chairs in a circle, and the people who carry the history of Donga-Mantung answering questions. Names of villages, why a rite is done the way it is done, who your family is connected to. There is nowhere else in Europe you can ask these questions in person.

Youth and children's programme

Limbum basics through games, storytelling, drumming and dance for the diaspora-born, plus a youth forum for teenagers to run their own session. Children stay with named minders from the host chapter while parents are in the assembly.

The food

Achu with yellow soup. Corn fufu and njama njama. Kati kati with rice. Puff puff and beans in the morning, roasted plantain and fish in the evening. People drive six hours for a plate of this.

Business and networking hour

One hour, structured introductions, chapter by chapter: business owners, nurses, engineers, hauliers, immigration advisers, people sending goods home. Bring cards. Listings from the WICUDA business directory are on the table.

Traditional attire day

Everyone in cloth — toghu, ndop, wrappers, gowns. It is the reason people start planning tailoring months before, and the reason the group photograph looks the way it does.

Before you book

The questions people actually ask

I have never attended before. Will I be out of place?
No, and this is the most common worry we hear. Tick "this is my first convention" at registration and the host committee pairs you with a member of your own chapter who meets you at the door, sits with you and introduces you around. You will not be walking into that hall alone.
Is it family friendly?
It is built around families. Children have their own programme with named minders from the host chapter while the assembly is sitting, there is a family room at the venue, and child and youth registration tiers are priced separately.
What if I do not speak Limbum?
Most of the weekend runs in English, with Limbum in the greetings, prayers and songs. Plenty of members born in Europe speak none of it. The youth programme teaches the basics, and nobody will test you.
What if I know nobody there?
Say so when you register. Chapter representatives are named on the registration desk and it is their job to place you with people from your country of residence, and where possible from your clan and village.
